7 Ways to Embrace Self-Dignity

Love who you are

Fortune Cookie Life Lesson #12

Treat yourself with the same dignity and respect you give others.

I look in the mirror and what do I see? The question that I asked myself seven years ago and the answers were not very pleasing. I have always battled with this concept and beat myself up over it many times. Can I genuinely look at myself and say yes, I am worth it? Most of my life this would end up in an instant, no you are not, and to me, that is the saddest part. I have only actually embraced my self-dignity a few years ago when I decided to take control and win the war that I battled with myself for so many years. I can honestly say today that I am worth every minute of every day.

What is self-dignity? To have self-dignity one must have self-respect and a sense of being worthwhile. Mastering self-respect can be a hard task to grasp and takes a lot of work if you are struggling with not having feelings of self-worth. Here are seven ways to help you gain a sense of self-dignity.

1. Have Encouragement
Having a way to encourage yourself is a great way to help you gain self-respect. Surround yourself with positivity and good influences in your life. Give yourself a chance to grow and never give up on how you want to feel about yourself. There were days that I lost my encouragement and on those days I would listen to positive music. One of my favorite musicians is Matisyahu, and his message always helped me get through my worst days. Find a source that gives you the hope to keep going on in your journey.

2. Perfection is Not Happiness
Perfection is not crucial to happiness. Not being perfect is one lesson I had to take to heart when I was finding my self-dignity. I always thought I had to be perfect and that mistakes were weaknesses. What I didn’t understand is that this was a distorted way to think and that with errors comes growth and growth is essential in finding one’s self-dignity. I was so focused on being perfect that I let my self-worth go down the drain because I was always beating myself up over nothing. When I let go of the perfection problem I noticed that I was happier and that I wasn’t as anxious about things. When you make a mistake in life take time to reflect on this mistake and move on because you will grow from this reflection.

3. It is Ok to Say No
Not being able to say no can be hard for someone who struggles with self-worth. Many times I considered myself a people pleaser and would agree even if that is not what I wanted to have happened. I feel it was more of a fear of not being accepted by those around me. I starved for acceptance because I did not recognize myself. When I started to say what I wanted to say and do what I wanted to do I gained a sense of power. I had control over what I thought was right. Being able to say no and be comfortable also gave me freedom from always being told what people would just automatically expect from me. It is ok to not go with the flow that’s part of being an individual.
Also, remember that it is ok to say no to someone who wants to bring you down. There are people out there that merely might wish to see you fail. Rember that this is not your problem and you do not have to accept their treatment. Stand up for yourself and be strong. Embrace who you are and love what makes you different from others.

4. Have a Plan
Just like setting goals having a plan for life gives you the motivation to work on things you want to change. Plan on knowing how to handle certain situations and people around you that might affect how you view yourself. If you are prepared, it will be easier for you to deal with these situations in life. Not everyone and everything will be on your side, and that is ok as long as you know how to handle these types.

5. Do Something
Do something fun and make the day great. Many times if I have a bummer day I just solely go for a walk to clear my thoughts and breathe. Read a good book or listen to pleasant music. Anything to boost the mood you are battling is better than just sitting there feeling bad about yourself. Enjoy life and remember that you are worth the time take and check with yourself. Invest in a hobby that makes you happy. Nothing is better than using your energy and creativity on something that heals you.

6. Choose You
Choosing you is not selfish. I had a hard time with this one when I became a mother. I had this desire to sacrifice myself and my world for my kids. I still do this, and every once in a while I need to take a step back. How can you help anyone when you are not helping yourself. Everyone needs time to reflect and grow and not choosing yourself holds you back from doing this. When I need time, I take time, and when I am done, I am a better mother, wife, and person for taking the time. Many times when dealing with not feeling worthy you feel as if you should not love yourself and this is not the case. Take the time to help yourself gain the respect you deserve.

7. Exercise
Getting up and moving can naturally boost your mood. Not only can this be positive to your mind it can be positive on your physical aspect as well. Exercise gets the body and minds active. Physical activity can get the endorphins going, and it can also help you in times of stress. I have friends that run merely because it is a form of therapy for them. Exercise can help you focus on goals and challenge you in ways you never thought possible. Challenging yourself can boost confidence and give you a sense of accomplishment.

How much are you worth? Take the time to understand and appreciate the things you do. Remember not to let negative people and actions get in the way of enjoying who you are. Surround yourself with positive people and energy. Know that you are not perfect and it is ok to be who you are. Being able to be strong will help you see your dignity.

Don’t Waste Time! 8 Ways to Turn Your Vision Into Your Reality.

Fortune Cookie Life Lesson #8

Watch one’s thoughts become one’s actions.

Where do you see yourself?  Do you see yourself wanting more out of the life that you have?  These are questions that many of us struggle with daily.  You want to move forward but are not sure how to begin, and the thought of the change brings on intense feelings of doubt and uncertainty.  You can attain your vision, and you can overcome your fears, it may not happen overnight, but it can happen if you practice these 8 steps to help you take your vision and turn it into reality.

Write down your goals.

Writing down your goals helps you visualize what can happen.  Rather than dreaming of what you want you have taken the initiative to write these down and stick with them.

Work small than large.

Break these goals into small goals and significant goals.  Sometimes if we try to go all in it can be overwhelming and can lead us to feel discouraged which won’t get us anywhere.  When we finish the smaller goal, we feel like we have climbed a mountain and can work toward our bigger picture.

Don’t Get Distracted.

It can be effortless to get distracted, and it is so important to keep an eye on the prize.  When these distractions arise do your best to control them and not let the overtake what you have worked so hard to create.

If it doesn’t work tweak it.

Sometimes visions take more than one try, and we have to be patient and realize that if it doesn’t work the first time we try and make it work the second or even third time.  Life is not easy, and most things are not just given; it will take some blood, sweat, and tears, but it is all worth it in the end.

Get support.

Surround yourself with people who want to see you succeed.  If you are around people who are not in your corner you will feel like your dream should never be a reality.  Those that love you will want to see you shine.

Realize that you want this more than anything.

Hard work is precisely that, and nothing comes easy.  Be able to make the conscious decision that this is what your future holds and you will do whatever it takes to get there.  This includes sacrifices you may have not thought about and realizing you are making this choice makes the vision so much more important.

Practice makes perfect.

Whatever your dream is you need to practice.  Usually when you want to do something that makes you happy you need to learn everything about it. Dive in and learn all you can and then practice the techniques that are taught to get you where you want to be.

Be open to all options.

Don’t shut our anything because you think that it doesn’t fit your box.  Many times thinking outside the box will give you the best results.  Look at all your options and weigh them before making any clear cut decisions.

Today is the day to show what you are made of, and take your vision and turn it into your reality.  Don’t waste time dreaming and start using your time to create the reality you have always wanted.

Beauty Inspiration

What does beautiful mean to you?

Fortune Cookie Life Lesson #8
There is no reference for beauty.

What does it mean to be beautiful? When I first picked this piece of paper out of my jar, I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to write about this. My first thought was when I read this was the phrase “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” because many things can be beautiful. It is not just about physical appearance, and many things around us can be considered attractive. There is also more to beauty than just what you see on the outside sometimes inner beauty can outshine what we see on the surface.
Growing up I always considered beauty to be nothing but a physical attribute. I did not find myself a beauty growing up. I was a small red-haired freckle-faced awkward child who shied away from most of the world. Many kids gave me tons of havoc for those physical attributes, so I considered those things a negative trait that I was cursed with. Thinking this, of course, was far from the truth. No one around me ever said I was beautiful so I grew up thinking there wasn’t much to me. With this thought process came lots of uphill battles and it took me a very long time to know and understood what real beauty meant. As I have come along in my life, I have genuinely found a meaning to what I feel beauty is, and I embrace these things every day.
1. Beauty is where I live.
I love where I live. I live in Fort Collins Colorado and this by far is one of the most beautiful places I have ever lived. I love being close to the mountains and being able to take in what is around me. I like to be able to hike a trail to the top and take in the fresh mountain air and the freedom of the wide open spaces. To be able to get to the top and sit and experience a quiet that gives me the most peace and calm.
Take a look around you and recognize the beauty that surrounds you. Everyone’s vision of beauty is different and to be able to stop for a moment and look at the place in which you live and recognize all the things that are around you that make you who you are and take a moment to appreciate these places.
2. Relationships with special people are beautiful.
I adore my relationship with my husband. He is my rock, my support, and best friend. If it were not for him to show me real beauty, I would not be where I am today. Being able to share life with those that are close to you is a beautiful thing. With those we love we get to experience some of the best parts of being.
I feel one of the ways to find beauty in a relationship is to look past the faults of our relationships. Nothing is perfect, and it takes lots of work to make it happen, but once we get past the thinking that everything should be perfect and finding fault we then get to appreciate the ones around us.
When a seed is planted, it needs care and time to grow. Once the seed has sprouted, it then turns into a beautiful flower. We can’t expect our relationships to be beautiful overnight. Just like flowers our relationships need nurturing to grow and become what we have always wanted.
3. My kids are beautiful.
I don’t want to brag, but I do believe I have some beautiful kids. Not just because they are cute but because they are beautiful human beings. I love to watch them grow and learn. Being able to teach them and help them along their path I feel has been my most significant purpose in life.
I want my kids to have a good life. I want them to be able to learn the things that I did not have the chance to learn right away. I want them to know that they are beautiful outside as well as inside and to take those traits with them in their lives. I want them to appreciate the world around them and find beauty in all things. For them to help make this world a more beautiful place would be something I would always hold in my heart.

4. I am beautiful.
A few years ago these words would never venture out of my mouth, and this was something that was hard for me to say, but I didn’t fully understand what that statement meant. One thing that I have learned through all my trials and tribulations is that you can not love others unless you like yourself. Learning to love myself was one of the biggest lessons that I have ever had to learn. I realized a few years ago that I was not doing what I needed to do as a wife, mother, and individual all because I lacked love for myself. I decided to dig deep and reevaluate my life, my upbringing and teach myself that I am worth it. I have worked very hard to get to this point, but I can honestly say that I do love who I have become. I love myself enough to be happy even with my flaws and be able to be the mom and wife that I need to be.
I love myself enough to take care of myself and work hard every day to let that freckled- face red- haired girl know she is beautiful and worth every minute of the day.
There is no reference to beauty. Beauty is not something that can be labeled. We are all different, and all of us have different qualities that add to the beauty of the world. Go out today and find the beauty that surrounds you. Not only is beauty around you but take a look at yourself and know that you are beautiful. There will be days when you will struggle but understand that the days that bring you down the most are the days that bring you strength. Make your beauty your inspiration.

5 Most Effective Ways to Overcome Worry

Can you control how much you worry about something?

Life Lesson Fortune #1

Instead of worrying and agonizing, move ahead constructively.

How many times have you worried about something so much it affects every minute of your waking hour?  Being worried about something can create so much extra stress in our daily lives.  Whether it being late on a bill,  having to study for a major exam or your relationship is on rocky territory. The feeling of being out of control can make it so that we lose our sanity.  Here are 5 ways to be worry free and not a worry wart.

Mindfulness-  All I can say is practice this and feel all the worry you once experienced feel a little lighter.   Mindfulness allows you to relax, take a moment not to think and give your body some clarity.  A great exercise is to take a slow deep breathe in and think of the word calm, and a slow deep breather out saying the word peace.  Allow your body to be calm and let it find some peace if only for a few minutes.

Get Rid of The All or Nothing Attitude- Sometimes we have to just admit there will be no straightforward answer to our problems. Sometimes we need to think outside the box and decipher if there is a solution. Be able to sit down and look for other answers you might even find one better than your original idea.

Focus on What is Positive- I feel like this can be really hard to do in certain situations. Being able to see the positive in any situation can give a person directly in their life. It tells that person that even in the darkest of times there will always be a little light.

Slow Down- Nowadays the world is rushing. many problems can be created by not being able to slow down and take time with something. If we don’t stop and think about issues we deal with we may not make the best choice. The next time a problem arises take a break and think about all the outcomes. The longer you take time to look at all solutions the better your choices will be.

Talk it out- Getting things out in the open can not only help you but will also help others around you. Your worry may be causing you to be short with your family or friends.
